The gem Aquamarine gets it’s name from the Latin words “aqua marina” meaning “sea water”. The sparkling blue color is reminiscent of the waters of the vacation paradise islands of the Caribbean. Ancient Greeks believed the stone embodied the spirit of the sea and had the power to protect sailors through long and dangerous voyages.
Aquamarine is a variety of the mineral called beryl. Pure beryl is colorless. Add a trace of iron and you have Aquamarine. Add chromium or vanadium and you have emerald. Most Aquamarine comes from Brazil with other sources in Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe.
